Steven Sacatos
When discussing creativity, Sacatos explains: "I try to listen to, to cultivate, and find my inner ear – and to trust it." His aim has always been "to make straightforward, intelligent, appealing work." He emphasizes accessibility, stating: "It's important for me that the piece is accessible and that it is enjoyable – and that's without the input of some critic telling why you have to like it."
Steven Sacatos is a representational painter and illustrator born in Montreal, Canada in 1964, who moved to New Zealand in 1970. Currently based in Switzerland, specifically in Fribourg, Sacatos has spent over two decades creating distinctive paintings and drawings that capture the landscapes and people of New Zealand, Greece, and Switzerland with what he describes as "a cartoony, or gently satiric edge."
Steven Sacatos represents a unique voice in contemporary representational art, combining technical skill with a distinctive perspective that captures the essence of place and people across three continents.
His commitment to accessibility and his rejection of abstract trends in favor of narrative, illustrative work places him in a tradition of artist-storytellers who document their world with both affection and gentle satire.
